Grilling ham steak is a really simple process. You can grill it on either a gas or charcoal grill. As a kid I remember mom and dad always making it, but they would fry the ham steak on the stove. It’s really good on the stove, but I like it better on the grill.
The nice thing about grilling ham steak is you can experiment with all sorts of different glazes and marinade to change up the flavors a bit. You can find ham steaks at your local butcher’s shop or grocery store. I usually try to get one that is about 1/2 inch thick.
To grill a ham steak all you need to do is set up your gas or charcoal grill for medium-high heat. We are going grill directly over the heat source. While your grill is heating up you are going to want to cut diagonal slits in the fat that wraps around the ham steak. Do this at about every 1 inch. What this does is it keeps your ham steak from curling while grilling.
Once your grill is ready and your ham steak is prepped put it on the grill right over the heat source. Grill for approximately 4 minutes on each side. You don’t want to overcook it as ham can dry out really easy. If you have a glaze or basting sauce, which I recommend, you will want to baste the ham once you flip it. Then after approximately 4 minutes flip it and baste it on the other side and grill for an additional 2 minutes.
That is all there is to grilling a ham steak. Ham steak is great grilled on its own, but with a glaze or marinade they can be so much better. Make sure you experiment with ham steak glazes and marinade to find one you really like.
